Thunderstorm stops Gold Coast race but gifts Craig Lowndes the Endurance Cup

MOTORSPORT: Thunder, lightning and heavy rain helped Craig Lowndes increase his legend status* when the Holden hero was awarded the Endurance Cup after the Gold Coast 600 was declared a washout* after 43 laps.

Continuing his fairytale farewell as he prepares to retire from full-time driving, Lowndes was named the endurance* season king after an abandoned race denied Scott McLaughlin his shot at the crown.

The Endurance Cup is awarded to the combination with the most combined points from the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast 600.

SOCCER: Olympic champion Usain Bolt will have to decide how much he wants to be a footballer after the Central Coast Mariners offered him a low-level offer to sign a professional deal.

It’s understood that the contract does not involve a financial contribution from Football Federation Australia’s marquee* fund, and could be as low as $150,000.

CRICKET: Usman Khawaja will have surgery on the knee he injured against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

But the in-form batsman is confident of a quick return, targeting the first Test of the summer to make his comeback to the Australian side.

“It will not be very invasive* (surgery) from what I have heard,’’ Khawaja told The Courier-Mail, setting his sights on the first Test against India on December 6.

MOTOGP: Marc Marquez clinched the 2018 MotoGP World Championship with two laps still remaining in the Japanese Grand Prix.

Andrea Dovizioso, who started in pole position, fought bravely, but slipped coming into the home straight.

“I feel really, really good,” said Marquez after sealing the championship. .

SOCCER: New Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic has been robbed of a first-up win with his former side Western Sydney coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw.

Striker Andy Keogh put Glory ahead in the 26th minute but Roly Bonevacia’s 65th- minute strike ensured the points were shared in front of 10,206 fans. Star Western Sydney striker Oriol Riera could have scored the winner in the 74th minute but his close-range sitter* sailed over the bar.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners recorded a 1-1 draw.
