NRL: Melbourne Storm have offered skipper Cameron Smith a new one-year deal that could see him reach a never before seen 400 NRL games.

Storm boss Dave Donaghy confirmed an official offer had been lodged with Smith’s manager Isaac Moses. Smith, 35, has played 377 games over the past 17 seasons. He went past Darren Lockyer’s (355) longstanding record last year.

NRL: Just a month out from the NRL finals, the Panthers have sacked* head coach Anthony Griffin.

It is believed the club considered Griffin’s approach as too “old school”* and the Penrith board decided he wasn’t capable of leading the club to its first premiership since 2003.

AFL: Andrew Gaff will play no further part in West Coast’s premiership campaign after being sent straight to the AFL Tribunal for his hit on young Fremantle star Andrew Brayshaw.

Gaff is expected to appear in person at the tribunal in Melbourne tonight to answer a striking charge graded by match review officer Michael Christian as intentional with severe impact to the head. Brayshaw had an operation at the weekend to repair his broken jaw and three displaced lower teeth.

Gaff’s punch yesterday triggered* calls from AFL greats to introduce a red card system for sending players off the ground but AFL boss Gillon McLachlan rejected this.

CRICKET: Aaron Finch is being seriously considered for his Test debut* against Pakistan in a new-look Australian cricket team.

Finch is the most successful white-ball cricketer in history never to wear a baggy green*, but that could all change as Australia prepares for changes after the sandpaper scandal in South Africa.

It’s understood Finch’s name has been discussed by selectors and he is a leading candidate* to take David Warner’s place at the top of the order in the UAE in October.
