AFL: Collingwood has increased its efforts to land superstar free agent Tom Lynch, visiting the key forward at his Victorian home yesterday.
Collingwood list boss Ned Guy met with the injured Gold Coast forward as he recovers from surgery on his knee. While Richmond was widely seen as the most likely club to secure Lynch, his meeting with the Magpies shows he is still seriously considering a move to Collingwood.
NRL: Broncos prop Korbin Sims is targeting a premiership farewell after declaring Brisbane has what it takes to snap a 12-year NRL title drought*.
Brisbane has won five of its past six matches and is beginning to fire at the right time of the year with five weeks remaining in the regular season.
The seventh-placed Broncos may have to win all of their remaining matches to secure a crucial top-four position, but Sims believes they can do it.
“I think we’re a hot chance of going all the way. I’ve played (114 NRL) games and never played in the finals. I’m still chomping at the bit* to get in there,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to it this year. We’ve got the right crop of guys here to go all the way.”
MOTORSPORT: Torn tyres, a slippery track and the first night race in 21 years — Saturday’s Sydney Supernight is going to be epic.
Supercars legend Mark Skaife believes the championship battle between Ford’s Scott McLaughlin and Holden’s Shane van Gisbergen could be decided because the 300km race — the longest single driver race in the history of Supercars — will be so unpredictable.
“It is one of the most difficult tracks in Australia to set up for,’’ Skaife said.
“It is a really important race meeting,’’ Skaife said.
AFL: Carlton young gun Patrick Cripps remains eligible* for the Brownlow Medal, but star teammate Charlie Curnow has been slapped with an AFL ban. AFL match review officer Michael Christian yesterday cleared Cripps of any wrongdoing in a tackle that concussed Gold Coast’s David Swallow.
Curnow, however, can accept a one-game suspension for striking Suns co-captain Steven May, who himself faces a one-game ban for rough conduct against Ed Curnow.
