When it comes to beloved children’s books, Australians get the picture.

A survey by book retailer Dymocks has shown the power of the picture book, with nine of the top 10 being picture books.

A total of 27,700 Aussie bookworms took part in the survey, with The Very Hungry Caterpillar being the No. 1 children’s book of the nation, followed by Hairy Maclary.

Possum Magic was the top-rating Australian title at No. 3, with We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and Where Is The Green Sheep in the top five.

Dymocks’ Imogen Neely said classics outweighed contemporary titles.

Possum Magic’s loveable characters continue to captivate generations of new audiences,” she said.

“Dymocks alone has sold more than 60,000 copies of Possum Magic in the past decade alone, and (it) hasn’t been out of print since it was first published more than 30 years ago.”

Surprisingly, the Harry Potter series slipped to eighth, having held first place from 2013-2016.
